All day the radio has been telling which stores open when on Friday. I refuse the call the day after Thanksgiving by its commercial name! I’m familiar with stores opening as early at 6 AM, but this year I was surprised to hear that some stores would be opening as early at 4 AM. Then, before turning off the radio, I heard of a place that would open at midnight. What?! Has it come to this?
There is a better way. Of course, I know you aren’t planning on heading out Friday without first having established your Christmas shopping budget. And, given our current economic status, you budget this year may be less than last year. I learned many years ago when my husband and I were on a very tight budget (we are still counting our nickels…), that Christmas is not supposed to make us depressed over how much we can’t spend and what fad toy we can’t buy the kids. Isn’t this supposed to be a happy, peaceful season?
So, before you hit the shops whether at the mall or online, do yourself and your family a favor and check out Simplify the Holidays. I signed up for their free copy of the Simplify the Holidays Brochure and read it last night. This may be the first year that I can start the shopping season actually feeling at peace and even empowered not to be overpowered by the “you must purchase to be happy” craze. Please check out the brochure and some of the other resources on the web for green, sustainable, eco-friendly, and alternative giving ideas.
Give thanks tomorrow (and always) and have a truly Merry Christmas too!
