Trail No. 1 – My daughter wants to get her brother a sweatshirt with a special image on it. We trekked down to our local shopping district of unique, organic, fair-trade, and/or otherwise green shops, but didn’t find something to fit the bill. Hunting out something online didn’t fit into her Christmas budget either. What to do?
Turns out there are still sustainable options for just such a moment. I learned that some of the big apparel companies are making corporate decisions to improve their social and environmental footprints. To my surprise, Hanes is one of those companies! My son will also be pleased to learn that his recently discovered favorite store, H&M is another such company.
Both of these companies are part of the Fair Labor Association. As affiliate members, these companies are striving to improve labor conditions in the production of their products and the environmental impact of their business. For a full listing of participating companies and to read about specific corporate policies and practices follow the links for specific companies on the FLA website.
How did we resolve Trail No. 1? My daughter bought a plain Hanes hooded sweatshirt and we used inkjet iron on transfer paper to customize it with a design that she selected.
