That’s what my son asked me the other day. “What do you mean?” I asked. He was snacking on one of his favorite treats, dried pineapples, and he said they taste like “yellow”, the color. Curious, I tried one and agreed, “like yellow” was the best way to describe the taste.
Normally, we buy dried pineapples from our local organic grocery store, My Organic Market. If you are ever in Maryland, do stop by. This package of dried pineapples, however, had the “Selective” label of one of those national grocery stores. Upon second look, we read that the ingredient list included Artificial Pineapple Flavor! Yuck!
So that’s where the yellow taste came from! My son’s beloved dried pineapples tasted like the fake flavor of yellow chewy square candies–like the ones with the stellar burst.
My kids think it funny that a fruit can taste so phony. I am at the same time proud, disgusted and disappointed.
- Proud that they so quickly identified the fake flavor.
- Disgusted that the national grocery store felt it necessary to corrupt something so simple and naturally tasty as dried pineapples.
- Disappointed that we were once again caught off our guard by buying something without fully reading the label!
Another reminder to be on guard and always read those labels!
