Sustainable Choices

In 2008, I learned what happens when individuals believe that “Yes we can!”  Little Ol’ Me when paired with You and grouped with our Neighbors added up to millions. I’m not a millionaire and you might not be either, but when we pooled our pennies, nickles, and dimes together, WOW!

In 2009, Yes, I can make sustainable choices. If you do too, just imagine the possibilities. Here’s a list of choices to get us started:

1. Choose organic. Why? Fewer chemicals used in the production means fewer chemicals released into the environment and fewer chemicals into our bodies.

2. Choose local. Why? The economy is a major challenge right now and our neighbors need jobs!

3. Choose reusable water bottles. Why? Those plastic disposable water bottles require tons of chemicals to produce and are adding tons to our trash heaps and they aren’t meant to be reusedread its label.*

4. Choose renewable energy. Why? Oh boy, this answer will be too long. In short, our lives, our planet, our future, and our livelihoods require it!

5. Choose fair-trade. Why? Because everyone deserves to be paid fairly for their labor and because children deserve to have a childhood free of forced labor.

* After writing Choice No. 3, I went to the store to find a water bottle from which I could get the exact wording of the note that discouraged refilling the bottles. Something like “Single use only.” “Do not freeze” etc. I searched and searched. I even read several soda bottle labels. I could not find a single such note! Have I made it up? Didn’t such a note exist? Eventually, I found the words “Do not refill.” on a bottle of imported Volvic water. Why not?
